The iPhone (known as the iPhone 2G after 2008) was the first
smartphone designed and marketed by Apple Inc. After years of rumors and
speculation, it was officially announced on January 9, 2007 and then released
in the US in June. 29, 2007. It features a quad-band GSM cellular connection
with GPRS and EDGE support for data transfer.
The development of the iPhone has been around since 2005,
when the former Apple CEO Steve Jobs coined the idea. Prior to Q1 2007's
announcement, the design was expanded into complete secrecy over the next 2
years.
Although many features of the iPhone are considered obsolete
by current standards, the device is seen as an important form of current cell
phones, which eliminates physical hardware buttons and stylus in favor of a
touch-based user interface. The successor iPhone 3G was announced in June 2008
Software
At the time of its release, the iPhone was marketed as running "OS X". The name of the operating system was revealed as the iPhone OS in the iPhone SDK release. Three major versions of the original iPhone operating system were supported before discontinuation: iPhone OS 1, 2 and 3. However, the full iPhone OS 3 feature set is not supported, and the last update the original iPhone received was iPhone OS 3.1.3
